Surviving Christmas with Acupuncture

Its Christmas time and we’re all getting ready to celebrate! Finishing work tasks to get everything sorted before the holidays start, then running around with shopping for gifts and planning for your holidays can be a stressful. Christmas is a great time to slow down and reflect on what we are grateful for, however, with all the tasks at hand it can quickly end up becoming a burden to our health.

Here are some tips to help you find a bit of peace in this year's 'silly' season...

  • Delegate. Allow others to help in the kitchen. Don’t be a martyr or control freak or you’ll be frazzled when you sit down to eat. Let someone chop, lay the table poor the drinks…go on, let go!

  • Don’t eat so much. You, yes YOU are in control of how much you put into your body. Put your cutlery down in between bites and chew properly. Your digestive system will thank you so much for this.

  • Breathe. If you find being with your family difficult or intense, remember that under stress your breathing becomes shallow, initiating the stress cycle. Remove yourself and find a quite space to do a few deep breaths, even starting your morning with meditation or yoga can prepare you for a busy day.

  • Sleep. Like stress, lack of sleep really messes with your mind and body so be assertive. Be the first to go and enjoy your much needed slumber. A nice bath can also help prepare the body for sleep, why not try adding some Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender oil.

  • Drink plenty of water. Not loads, and not a specific amount. Just enough to help you feel hydrated. Drink room temperature water in sips throughout the day. One way to monitor how hydrated you are is the colour of your wee. Too dark, not enough, too light too much… straw coloured indicated your internal organs are doing exactly what they need to.

  • Book in for an Acupuncture or Massage appointment before the year is out. Getting your body and mind in check before the Christmas break is one way to help your body slow down.
