What is a healthy menstrual cycle? It is a cycle that is regular, generally between 28-30 days and lasts for 3-7 days. It can involve some discomfort but should not be severely painful. Many women think that an irregular or painful flow can be normal. Or perhaps you have tried other forms of medicine and treatments. If you have an irregular and/or painful cycle, you may want to look to acupuncture for answers.

Acupuncture can provide specific treatment approaches for irregular periods, more so than what is available in western medicine. Acupuncture training provides some very special, powerful and specific approaches in this regard.

Sometimes an otherwise healthy woman has menstrual cycles which are scattered all over the calendar. One month her period will be long, another month it will be short. Sometimes she may skip a period entirely. She may have light spotting a couple of times a month. From ovulation, to migration through the fallopian tubes, to the building of the lining of the uterus, to menstruation; acupuncture can ease any pain and assist in regulating a cycle. Women have been practicing it for centuries in China.

In the lead up to menopause, termed peri-menopause, hormone levels may fluctuate erratically, causing changes to a menstrual cycle including a heavy flow. This is due to higher levels of estrogen and lower levels of progesterone.

In cases of female infertility, acupuncture works by helping to regulate reproductive hormones and assist in the maturation of ova (or eggs). While the flow and balance of key hormones like FSH and estrogen is regulated by the brain - by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland - the acupuncture needles themselves are inserted in associated pathways far from these organs.

It is advised to have treatments weekly and you will see results in as little as a few weeks.

Fertility and treatment to regulate menstrual cycles has become a huge business, and there are many people now offering acupuncture who do not necessarily belong to professional associations and whose charges can be on the high side.
